We have to have 82 to 85 scholarship players (excluding walkons
except maybe Faloughi) in order to have enough truly athletic guys on
our special teams, and to be able to resupply the two deep O and D as
well as the special teams when injuries and disciplinary violations
deplete our roster for upcoming games.
I counted only 74 guys on last year's roster who were not originally
walkons.
Having 11 less recruits to start a season has the effect of self-
imposed sanctions.
It takes a full roster to be able to build the roster deep in each
class and avoid the wipeout we're going to face after we finish the
2012 season, when we'll lose about 15 of our top 18 guys on D.
When we go back to playing two or three of the best 5 SEC teams in
the regular season, we'll really need a deep and strong roster of
recruited acolytes.
