Republicans, as a group, lost a lot of credibility about deficits
during the Bush era. But I don't buy the Dems' line either.
An interesting play on words could be done here, btw. One could say
the following and be mostly correct:
"So, when Democrats assail the deficits under President Bush, are
they to be taken seriously? Yes and no. Yes, they are politically
interested in blaming Mr Bush for deficits, since all is viewed fair
in love and partisan politics. And yes, they are, indeed,
rhetorically opposed to deficits created by tax cuts (although that
did not prevent them from enacting tax cuts as part of the 2009
stimulus, under President Obama). But no, it is not deficits
themselves that worry Democrats, but rather how they are caused:
deficits caused by spending increases are fine, except for the
military; but tax cuts brought in by Republicans are diabolical"
Of course, these are extreme economic times. So, in a sense, both
parties are a little off-kilter right now. I'd love for the
Republicans to get the congress back this year, and then maybe a
divided government could result in each side's worst excesses being
tamed. I think putting everything on one party or the other is not
healthy....and I say that as a registered Republican...
